Monday, January 6th, 2014 – In the morning Bill dresses and then goes to one of the higher decks to check how the weather feels while I get ready. Then he comes back down to get me and we go up to the Lido deck for breakfast together. That is almost always our routine on sea days on a cruise ship.

This morning 5 minutes after Bill left an announcement went throughout the ship including the cabins, “Bright Star on Deck 7, Bright Star on Deck 7”. Each cruise line has its own emergency code system. On Holland America they say “Bright Star” to alert medical personal to get there quickly. They used to say “Code Blue” but passengers figured that one out quickly and it alarmed them so they changed it to “Bright Star” which means someone has died or is having a heart attack, stroke or other situation that can lead to death.

Since Bill was heading for an upper deck he knew I would worry when I heard the “Bright Star” alert so he immediately returned to our cabin so I would know that he was okay. I wasn't panicking but I wasn't real comfortable until he got back either.

After breakfast we did miserable in trivia and then attended a computer class, “Meet the New Windows.” When I got on the ship I hated Windows 8 – but now, just maybe, there is hope I might learn to love it. Over the 113 days of the cruise there will be almost 55 different Windows 8 classes as well as general computer classes and camera classes. On sea days they are at 9AM and the class is repeated at 1PM. They also have several hours of non-class time when you can talk to Craig, the Techspert (he works for Holland America but is trained by Microsoft – Microsoft also supplies all the computers in the workshop) and he will personally work with you to help set up your computer or explain anything you don't understand. It blows us away that this is complimentary to the passengers. They had similar computer classes on Princess that I wanted to take but they were just too expensive! With Holland America – they don't cost a penny - its covered in the cost of the cruise.

The afternoon computer class was packed. Note to self: “Get there early tomorrow so you can get a seat with a computer terminal”. There are 19 computers in the classroom and if you aren't early enough you have to sit in a student desk in the back of the room with no computer terminal. And if you are really late you can't even get your big toe in the room it's so packed. You will have stand in the doorway and listen to the class.

The party to meet the Captain was at 7:00PM – we don't usually go to these things but I'm glad we went to this one. It was lovely. There was a free open bar so Bill and I had a couple Fuzzy Navels each and the appetizers were fabulous. I especially liked the jumbo scallops wrapped in bacon.

I decided to have fun with my makeup and tried gold glitter eyeliner to jazz up my black pants and top. Bill loved it and a complete stranger told me I should wear the gold glitter eyeliner all the time. Uh, I don't think so.

Then surf & turf for dinner. Everyone at our table asked them to hold the turf and double the surf. I had 2 lobster tails, the other two ladies at our table had 2 lobster tails, and Bill and Jan ordered 3 each. Then Jan ordered a 4th lobster tail for dessert! Jan is so tiny and petite – we don't understand how she ate 4 lobster tails but we saw her eat them. (Jan and Bill and I were all able to change our assigned dinner table numbers to get seated at the same dining room table for dinner every night – so glad we were able to work it out that way!)
