AGC Project 52 ~ Week 3

These two photos don't appear to have anything to do with each other at first glance or even at second, beyond the fact that I happen to be in both of them. This week's Anything Goes Weekly Challenge was to scrap about one of your passions that doesn't have anything to do with scrapbooking. For me, that's always going to have something to do with horses.

But it's more than that. I'm passionate about SHARING, about giving back to future generations the wealth of knowledge and the passion and enjoyment that these animals bring to our lives. I'm a teacher. It's part of the fabric of my character. In any situation, I'm going to be the person teaching someone else about how to do, or what to do, or when to do, or why to do. Or I'm going to be coaching, or assisting, or mentoring, or training, or showing an example… You get the idea.

This past week, I had two events that were completely different, but both involved my work with horses and kids. The top photo is from the YMCA of Tulsa's alumni dinner, where I went as my daughter's Plus One. I didn't expect to see anyone that I knew since I left my job as the Tulsa YMCA's equestrian director about ten years ago, and it's a young person's world. Most of them move on after they graduate from college. But during the awards and recognitions, the emcee made a point to announce my presence and tell the group, “you need to make a point to talk to Miss Pat. She is a huge part of the Y's legacy…” I blushed about ten shades of pink … I'm not great with being noticed like that.

The other photo is of me and two of my Horse Masters friends. We went to Norman to help judge the regional Pony Club rally. There were written tests, various judged activities, and lots of opportunities for interacting and sharing. I judged a fun project that was a “blind feel” activity. You put your hand inside a box and based on what you feel - NO PEEKING - you have to tell the judge (me) what it is. It was HARD. I'm not sure I could have done it. Working with Pony Club kids - judging shows, rallys, ratings, and assisting with mounted and unmounted lessons - gives me the same opportunity to participate in this sharing of a mutual passion. They're younger, but they're smart and they're eager to learn. They pick my brain, they ask for advice, and they want to know what I think. It's kind of amazing really - not many places in the world today where kids actually care what adults think, you know?

Someone said to me one time, “oh, you work with horses…” and I said, “no, I work with kids. Horses are just the vehicle that I use to reach them.” There's a song that runs through my head when I think about what it is that I do with this kids and horses thing, and I hope someday - not too SOON, mind you - that they think like this when they remember me….

~ Legacy ~
I don't mind if you've got something nice to say about me
And I enjoy an accolade like the rest
And you could take my picture and hang it in a gallery
Of all the who's-who's and so-and-so's
That used to be the best at such and such,
It wouldn't matter much.

I won't lie, it feels alright to see your name in lights,
We all need an 'Atta boy' or 'Atta girl'
But in the end I'd like to hang my hat on more besides
The temporary trappings of this world.

I want to leave a legacy,
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to you enough?
To make a mark on things
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy.

I don't have to look too far or too long awhile
To make a lengthy list of all that I enjoy
It's an accumulating trinket and a treasure pile
Where moth and rust, thieves and such
Will soon enough destroy.

Not well-traveled, not well-read
Not well-to-do, or well-bred.
Just want to hear instead,
Well done, good and faithful one';

I want to leave a legacy,
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to you enough?
To make a mark on things
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy.
