The best advice I ever got was from my dad when I was getting ready to start my teaching career. I'd been hired for my "first real job" and my dad told me...
"At the end of your first year, you are going to have a reputation with the student body. Knowing that you will have one gives you control over what it is. You will never get a second chance to make that first impression, so you decide what you want that impression to be and then BE that teacher. "
This photo of my dad was taken about the same time as the day he gave me these words of wisdom. I'm sure he's forgotten he ever said them, or if he hasn't, I'm not sure that he realizes what a tremendous difference they have made in my life. I've never forgotten those words, and I frequently repeat them. People who know me well will tell you that they are words that I live by....you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Around this same time, Daddy and a small group of his friends began meeting at Carl's Junior (known as Hardee's back then) on weekend mornings. They'd sit around and fuss and discuss and drink coffee for a couple of hours, forming a tight bond of friendship that lasted through the rest of all of their lives. They became known locally as the Sanhedrin - partly in jest, but mostly because the storehouse of knowledge, wisdom, and life experience in that group was valuable to the entire community. It did not take long before most of the entire town began dropping in at Carl's just to stop and chew the fat with Daddy and his friends.
Most of those men are gone to God now, and I know that Daddy misses them tremendously. I'm sure they're waiting for him and will have the coffee pot on and a hot biscuit waiting for him when he gets there. I have no doubt they'll all pick up the conversation right where they left off.
Nothing really fancy here -- some fussy cutting on the floral corner, a couple of die cuts for the flower, envelope, and leaf flourishes, a border punch, and a quarter of a doily. I'm really pleased how pretty it turned out from such a hodgepodge of stuff. The title is from two different packages of rub-on letters that I'm trying to use up.
