I met John ten years ago when i called him to come out and give Java her first hoof trim. She was 4 weeks old, and I explained to him that I was more concerned about her having a good experience than I was about it being a good farrier job. He totally "got it," and from there on, like all friendships do, we've grown quite fond of each other ... he is the one person who adores Java as much as I do, and in fact, he put her first 90 days under saddle on her. He's the only person that I trusted to do it like I would have.

Tom - my husband - does not ride, but he trusts me to ride with John, because John is one of the few people that I trust to ride WITH. He enjoys just riding down the trail, not doing anything stupid, and enjoys a good hamburger when we get done with a 5 or 6 mile ride. He works like I do, and he keeps my farm neat and tidy. I really don't know how Tom and I would manage our 20 acre homestead without John's help.

This week, John helped me relocate four raccoons, built me a 4' x 4' raised garden bed, moved a couple of round bales for the horses, and scrubbed out the water troughs. He likes to keep busy, and the truth is he likes working for me because I don't "boss him around." I point our all the things that I would like to "get done" and then let him decide how he wants to approach doing them.

But today - today was a beautiful day and we took the opportunity to take the girls out for a ride. And we thought it might be fun to take a selfie ... so we did.

Left to right - Java, John, me, and Bonnie the camera hog.
