A year ago, this was a huge elm tree that had a canopy that provided great shade in the bottom of my south pasture. Then we had a nasty storm blow through one night and the next morning, this magnificent tree was on the ground.

The root ball was taller than the top of my head, and the base of the trunk measured five feet across. We cut it up into smaller pieces so that it would be easier to burn - but this longer piece looked like it would make a pretty good cross country schooling obstacle, so I asked my handyman to leave it.

Elms don't make good fire wood, good lumber, or good fence posts. In fact the only thing that elms are really good at is making shade trees. It's so sad to see this one returning to the elements. It just seems like such a waste.
