Land Of The Free

I am so proud to be an American.

I have never in my adult life been able to recite the Pledge of Allegiance without a quiver in my voice or to sing the Star Spangled Banner without having tears roll down my cheeks.

I am so thankful that I was born here. I am truly grateful for the liberties that are my American birthright. And I am deeply indebted to the heroes who have made those liberties part of the fabric of my thought.

I am the mother of an American soldier, and I am afraid to put a voice to what I feel when I think of my daughter deploying to Iraq, that if I give it words, I will somehow give the idea life and make real the possibility of her becoming one of those heroes.

But at the same time, I am so very proud of her strength, her courage, her willingness to serve so that everyday people in other parts of the world can someday experience the liberties that I take for granted each and every day.

I am an American. I am a patriot. I am proud.
